Avandia is a drug used to help people with Type 2 diabetes control their blood sugar. Type 2 diabetes is also called adult-onset diabetes. It does not necessarily require injections of insulin as Type 1, or juvenile diabetes, does. Avandia is prescribed by the doctor and can be taken along with insulin, if need be, or can be taken as a standalone drug.

Avandia was first marketed in 2000 as a replacement for another drug called Rezulin due to that drug’s adverse affects. However, it became apparent at that time that the potential side-effects of taking Avandia would require the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to put a list of warnings out about it.

Potential side effects listed by the FDA include:

  • Cardiovascular problems and congestive heart failure
  • Dangerously low blood sugar
  • Macular edema, or swelling in the eye that can cause blurry or decreased vision
  • Hepatitis or liver failure that may lead to needing a transplant or death
  • Recurrence of ovulation in women who have stopped having periods, but do not use birth control or have not yet reached menopause

After the FDA announced these potential side effects, another group of dangerous conditions was linked to taking Avandia. Other potential problems the FDA alerted users to include:

  • Headaches
  • Cold and flu-like symptoms
  • Low red blood cell count
  • Increased incidence of bone fractures

In May, 2007, the FDA added a black box warning to Avandia. Black box warnings are a step taken by the FDA when the danger is great. The next step would mean withdrawing the drug from the public. In this case, it was found that Avandia greatly increased the chances of heart attack and heart failure in those who were taking the drug.

Because Avandia is still used widely for type 2 diabetes, the risk of heart attack, heart failure, and death are a very real concern. Many of the other symptoms listed here should also not be taken lightly if you are taking Avandia for type 2 diabetes.
